Swords is one of the most important north county Dublin towns and has an overall population of around 44,000 people in its greater area. It has a population target for up to 100,000 people as a Designated Metropolitan Town by the Local Authority. It is located in County Fingal close to Dublin Airport and is the administrative centre for the county with landmark offices of Main Street. The town can trace its origins back to 560, having been founded by Saint Colmcille.
The town has seen enormous growth through the last 25 years with the development of estate such as Rivervalley, Swords Manor, Oaklands, Boroimhe and many others. The growth of the town is set to continue form many years, contributed to by it’s close proximity to Dublin Airport, the M1 Motorway and good access links to Dublin Port. Other growth factors include a skilled local labour force, the existence of large undeveloped green areas north and west of the town, and the proposed developments in public transport such as the Metro-North high speed route linking with the city centre via Dublin Airport and Dublin City Univrsity (DCU). The Metro-North line will facilitate economic and population expansion in the town.
Swords has a wide range of shops, banks, pubs, and other businesses, including a large modern shopping centre, the Pavilions Centre with multi-screen cinema. Swords Castle is undergoing a significant redevelopment and is intended to become a centre of leisure and a tourist attraction. The town is served by a number of schools, including five primary schools and four secondary schools. Local employers include Opec, Bristol Myers Squibb and various employers and businesses in Seatown Industrial Estate and Airside Retail and Business Park.
